When the temps start getting as high as they have been we will do anything possible to keep the heat out of the house.

Recently we discovered grilled foil packets because they don’t heat up the house. As it turns out the whole family loves them, and there is NO MESS (that is the best part, really).

There really isn’t much to them– they are so easy to do! You just throw all the food in, fold it up and put it over a grill, a campfire, or even in the oven

Tonight we tried a Continue reading “Guess #whatsfordinner tonight 7/25/2016 #food”

Well it looks like summer is in full swing here. Again today we were hit with another critical alert from our electric company. Another 42 cent/kwh rate day.

That is exactly why we started really looking hard for good crock pot meals. Tonight’s has moved into the realm of a family favorite. In fact, Jaque said that when our son came into the kitchen and smelled it cooking he said something like “oh good, I love that chili”. Well we don’t call it that but it is just as good as a bowl of chili. What we had was  Continue reading “Guess #whatsfordinner tonight 7/21/2016 #food”

Earlier this week we had a delicious Baked Ham with Cherry-Pineapple Glaze and we had leftover ham. Last week we had Zucchini Pancakes the zucchini we had was huge. Since it was fresh from the garden it kept well.

This was the perfect combination for a great Continue reading “Guess #whatsfordinner tonight 7/13/2016 #food”

After yesterday evening’s carnivore fest it was time for something lighter.

In fact, tonight we went vegetarian… no meat at all, and only a little cooking. Just a little blanching of some Sugar Snap Peas

This will really fit well into out Summer Electric Plan.

Tonight we had one of our   Continue reading “Guess #whatsfordinner tonight 7/12/2016 #food”

This week we are starting with another large cut of meat. HAM!!

It’s going to be hard to make it last. . . . . We love it so much.

This will really fit well into out Summer Electric Plan. True, we have to bake it which will heat the house one day but later in the week we will get a reprieve.

Tonight we had a truly delicious Continue reading “Guess #whatsfordinner tonight 7/11/2016 #food”

Why my kids don’t allow couponing

People love coupons, in fact one site reports that anywhere for 81%-96% of Americans report using coupons. If that is the case we are in the minority, but why? Clipping coupons is usually the first thing that comes to mind when people think of saving on the grocery budget. Why don’t we use them more? Continue reading “Why my kids don’t allow couponing”

Guess #whatsfordinner (well lunch) tonight 7/9/2016 #food

So at the beginning of the week we made Smoked Brisket.

The thing about brisket, though, is that you have to make so much. Ours was 12 pounds. Granted we had friends over but that still worked out to 2 pounds each. Way more meat than anyone needs in one sitting. So we set some aside for lunches and dinner Friday night.

Friday night though we ended up getting dinner out with family. So we shifted that meal to lunch today. It was a simple lunch Continue reading “Guess #whatsfordinner (well lunch) tonight 7/9/2016 #food”

This was so well received the last time we had it we just had to repeat it. The  PassionCook gave us the idea for the side dish and a friend of mine at the Dallas Farmers Market gave me the recipe for the main dish. Both are fantastic but together they are better then the sum of their total.

For the main dish we had Continue reading “Guess #whatsfordinner tonight 7/6/2016 #food”

Did you know we are on Yummly? #recipes

Have you ever heard of Yummly?

Have you ever wanted to save a link to a recipe you wanted to try? It’s kind of a hassle to do it in your browser. With Yummly it is really simple just look for the ‘Yum button’ on the post and click it and save it to your own collection. I just installed a button yummly_button on my site. You’ll find it at the bottom of each post. Even if the site doesn’t have such a button you have the option of installing a button on your favorite browser too. This allows you to capture links to just about any recipe you find on the web. NICE.

Its a really great application for capturing recipes you find on the web, actually one of the top. I’ve been using it for some time to capture recipes from all of the web. Other sites exist to do similar things but Yummly is purpose built for recipes and has a great community to go along with it. It is the only one I have found that allows you to include or exclude specific ingredients and perform searches according to your particular diet preferences.

Recently, though I found out that it is possible to become a ‘publisher.’ Hopefully by doing so it will make it easier for those outside the WordPress community to find the recipe’s you and I have found so enjoyable.
