So you are cooking your favorite cookies and you realize you’re out of
brown sugar!
Now what? Is there a substitute for brown sugar?
Why, yes!
But first, let’s ask, what’s in brown sugar?
Well there are 2 kinds of brown sugar.
Natural brown sugar is partially refined sugar with some molasses left in it.
Commercial brown sugar is just white sugar with molasses added.
Either way its just plain sugar and molasses. The only difference between light brown sugar and dark brown sugar is the amount of molasses in it.
With that information, you can make your own brown sugar at home.
Here’s the simple recipe for light brown sugar:
1 cup (200g) white sugar
1 tablespoon (15 mL) molasses
To make it dark brown sugar, you can add up to 1/4 cup molasses.
That’s it. I bet you can even guess the rest! Get a fork or blender and mix them together.
I didn’t know you could add up to a 1/4 cup. Thanks for sharing.
